Progress Reports

We will be sending termly progress reports to your parents or guardian to provide feedback as to your progress to date.

The first report will go out in December 2004, the second report in April 2005 and the final report with your grades will be distributed in July 2005. There will also be a Parents’ Evening during the autumn term. Details to follow.

Assignments

Assignments are crucial to your success and are an integral part of your course. There are some important rules that you need to adhere to:

Assignment deadline and feedback

You must hand in your assignments on time, i.e. meet the deadline of the assessment. Assignments submitted before or on the due date will be marked and feedback given to you within 13 working days. You may not necessarily have the work back, but should receive feedback. If you do not receive feedback within this time period, you need to raise this with your tutor.

Late assignments

Assignments handed in after the due date will only be awarded a Pass (provided it meets the Pass criteria), and feedback will be given within one calendar month. A month may stop you progressing, so be advised. Avoid the problem by submitting your assignments on time.

Extension

Should you require an extension to the deadline, you must apply in writing before the due date by completing a pale blue card. Give this card to your subject tutor for approval. If it is agreed, the subject tutor will sign it and give it back to you. You must attach this card when you submit your assignment otherwise it will be classified as late.

Submitting assignments

When you submit your assignments, make sure you sign the tutor’s log book. This will be the only proof that you have submitted your work. Don’t hand in your assignments in corridors, as your tutor may not have his or her log book with them.

Appeals

If for any reason you are not happy with the grade you have been awarded, you are entitled to appeal. Please follow the process outlined below. The lecturer marking the work will probably be able to deal with any concern but the other stages are there if necessary. Your tutor will give you a form to complete if you need one. If you are unsure about how to proceed at any stage the Student Services Manager will be able to advise you.

1 Discuss difficulty with Lecturer who marked the work

Do this within two working days

2 Discuss with Lecturer and Course Team Leader

If unresolved ask for the Course Team Leader to review within seven working days

3 Make appeal in writing to Lecturer with copy to Head of Department

If still unresolved you can ask for this further review within 14 working days

4 Appeals Panel

Problems that still remain will be dealt with on a termly basis

Attendance

Each term we will award students with a certificate of good/excellent attendance for those who have achieved over 90% attendance rate. Their names will be put in a draw, where the prize will be a £20 voucher. Remember that the minimum requirement for attendance is 85% and we expect 100%.

Induction

We hope you have had an informative induction and have now settled in your groups.

Inevitably, in the first few weeks of term, there can be some disruption to your timetable. We have tried to minimise changes as much as possible. We are confident that your timetable will settle within the next week.

Course representative meeting

We have had our first course rep meeting. Generally, every course rep stated that you were happy and that lecturers were helpful and supportive. There were some initial hiccups with timetables in the first two weeks, but most lessons started on time. Some lessons were not so challenging and some not so interesting, which we will be addressing. On the whole most classes were good and some of you have already learnt a lot. There were some issues raised about IDs, the Refectory and the Common Room, which Student Services will be dealing with.

We want to thank all the course representatives for attending the meeting and for being courageous in raising concerns. We will have another meeting before Christmas to discuss progress.
